I think it has happened to many people, especially beginners, to experience feelings that are not particularly pleasant in that moment of silence and stillness, as if we have to force our body to remain still when it has no desire to do so. Over time, lesson after lesson, we learn to let go, to “be” in Savasana, to observe the sensations that the practice has left us with, to listen to our body and our thoughts, without constraint.
Then there comes a day that you wait for that moment, and when you lie on the floor and take a deep, liberating breath, unfolding every single vertebra to the floor and letting go of every single muscle in your body, you feel a deeper and deeper sense of well-being, and from that moment on, you can’t live without it!
5 GOOD REASONS TO NOT SKIP SAVASANA!
1.
Deep relaxation: Savasana promotes deep relaxation of the body and mind. Skipping it would mean depriving yourself of this moment of tranquility and rest that allows the body to recover and regenerate.
2. Integrating the benefits of the practice: After working intensely with the body in a yoga class, Savasana provides an opportunity to integrate the benefits gained during the practice. During this relaxation phase, the body has a way to absorb and assimilate the positive effects of yoga.
3. Stress and anxiety reduction: Savasana is particularly effective in calming the nervous system, reducing stress and relieving anxiety. This posture promotes the release of accumulated tension in the body and encourages a state of mental calm and tranquility.
4. Balancing energy: Savasana allows balancing the subtle energy in the body, helping to re-establish a harmonious flow of prana (life energy). Skipping it could prevent this balancing process and leave the body’s energy in an unbalanced state.
5. Mindfulness and meditation: The practice of Savasana provides an opportunity to cultivate mindfulness and meditation. By remaining in a state of mindful relaxation, one can develop greater mental presence and an experience of deeper connection with oneself.
Of course, there may be situations when you need to skip Savasana, such as if you are short on time or feel too agitated or restless.
I recommend always practicing Savasana after practice, even for a few minutes…our body and mind will thank you!!
